The obvious reason that we want more egg-mobiles is to…. produce more eggs! Because more eggs = more sales and more eggs to supply the local school (a partnership we hope to activate mid 2025). It also means more acres of ground are interacting with more than one species of animal, which is beneficial for the soil and grass.
We have built one egg-mobile so far! It houses 150 layer hens that are kept safe inside at night from predators, and they get let out for the day time to live their best lives and lay nutritious eggs. We used a Salatin-style model to build our egg-mobile and with the move to the new farm, the infrastructure broke in transit. Getting two more of these going will take $1200- please consider giving toward building new egg-mobiles! It’s a win-win situation, we just need to get building!
Another wonderful benefit of this project is that we get to employ people! Thank you for helping get this project re-started with new materials to rebuild and expand for these eggs that are high in demand in this rural area.
Chicken. Nyama. Pollo. Mmmmm.
What’s better than chicken? Tasty chicken. What’s better than tasty chicken? Nutrient dense chicken. The beauty of our model is we take your classic broiler bird (designed to grow quickly) and put it out on grass and fresh air (where a road runner would typically be found) and then we dress it and process it quickly with no harsh chemicals. You end up with a chicken that has more substance to it (doesn’t feel like you’re biting into water) and has more vitamins, nutrients, and amino acids in it.
Then there’s also the added benefit of what the chickens do to the land. Ideally, you have a pen of broilers trailing a herd of cattle or sheep that have just passed through a pasture. Each day, the pen is pulled forward it’s full length, so the chickens are on fresh grass and are never in their own manure. The chickens love to peck apart the poo of livestock animals, clearing out pests (which are tasty snacks for the chickens!) and breaking down large cowpies into small bits that can soak back into the soil after the next good rain. With that added organic matter getting back into the ground faster than if the chicken didn’t break it down, the grass will sprout quicker and the soil will hold more moisture. Working with nature is a beautiful thing!
Currently we have 2 pasture poultry pens, named Sophia’s Pen and Jacob’s Pen after our friends that sponsored the materials to get them going! By June 2025, our goal is to have 2 more pens on the ground. Please consider giving toward this goal!
A surprising opportunity to organize a marriage seminar in October of 2022 with the staff of the farm where we rent land gave us so much excitement that we wanted to do more of them. The harvest is plentiful and the community around us is thirsty for gospel-based discussions on marriage. We are passionate about family and have since gotten to take part in women’s conferences, speaking at youth groups and teen camps, parenting seminars, and we are excited for more opportunities as they present themselves!
We moved in November 2024, and have seen there are 2 primary and 2 secondary schools in our close vicinity. We are excited to see new relationships with the schools and how they’ll blossom.
When there are many needs, and there is a long history, we want to do our homework and hear out the teachers, the students and their parents, and other organizations that partner with schools. We might get to dust off some community development tools we learned back in college and discover the best way(s) to be of service to this Matobo District community. Stay tuned for updates!
